What is no-bake sand casting?

No-bake sand casting, also called air-set or self-setting sand casting, is a process where the molding sand is mixed with a chemical binder and a catalyst so it hardens on its own at room temperature. Because the mold cures by chemical reaction rather than in a heated oven, it forms a strong, rigid mold without baking. At Trushape we use no-bake molds to produce sound, dimensionally stable castings from 3 to 40 kg (6.6 to 88 lb) in over 50 alloys.

How is no-bake sand casting different from green sand or shell molding?

Accepted Answer

Green sand uses moist clay-bonded sand that stays soft, while shell molding uses resin-coated sand cured against a heated metal pattern. No-bake sand is chemically bonded and self-hardening, so the mold sets rigid at room temperature without heat. That rigidity gives better dimensional stability on larger molds, and the tooling can be simple wood or resin patterns, which keeps it flexible and low cost for larger or lower-volume parts.

What part sizes and weights can you produce with no-bake sand casting?

Our no-bake sand casting covers parts from roughly 3 to 40 kg (6.6 to 88 lb). For components outside that band we switch process: investment casting handles small, intricate parts from 0.003 kg, while lost foam casting reaches up to 90 kg. Because Trushape runs six casting processes in-house, we match each part to the most suitable method instead of forcing one process to fit.

Which alloys can be cast using the no-bake process?

Accepted Answer

No-bake sand casting suits a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We commonly cast carbon and low alloy steels, stainless steels, grey and ductile iron, and copper-based alloys such as bronze and gunmetal in no-bake molds, drawing on a portfolio of more than 50 alloy grades. Every melt is verified by spectrometer chemistry, and EN 10204 3.1 material test certificates are provided.

When should I choose no-bake sand casting over investment, shell or lost foam casting?

Accepted Answer

Choose no-bake when you need medium to large parts in low to medium volumes and want economical, flexible tooling with sound structure and good dimensional stability. Choose investment casting for small, highly detailed parts with the finest finish, shell molding for thin-walled parts with a smoother surface at higher repeatability, and lost foam for very large or complex single pieces up to 90 kg. Do you machine, heat-treat and inspect no-bake castings in-house?

Accepted Answer

Yes. After shakeout and fettling, no-bake castings are finished entirely in-house with CNC machining, heat treatment and surface treatment, then inspected with our Zeiss CMM, Keyence VMM and non-destructive testing. This single-source, melt-to-finished-part control shortens lead times and gives full traceability from spectrometer-checked metal to the final inspection report.
